How to handle a stubborn child

When a child is a stubborn type, it can be a hard thing to get them on your side, but that doesn't mean they're stubborn. They might not understand why they are being stubborn but they will want their needs met, and sometimes that means you have to go through your frustrations to try to convince them. The best way to handle a stubborn child is to make sure you're doing what they want, be firm, and show them some patience and understanding when necessary. Here's how to do it.
Make yourself available and let them know you have time, your phone number, or something else you are ready for. It's important that you allow them to choose who they want to talk with, so don't just say, "No, I don't think it's the right time." When your child says they're having problems, tell them you're here if they need someone to listen or get them out of the house. Talk about everything from what you're going to eat for dinner, to get out of bed. Tell them to tell people they're feeling better if they just let you take them to the park.
Tell them they can call you if they need some attention or need to go somewhere. Try to give some insight into what is going on in their life. Remember to listen to what they want and give them space to express their worries and worries. Don't just tell them what to do, especially if they aren't happy with the outcome. This is a very strong time for children and can help keep them focused and allow them to open up and feel better about themselves.
Try to find ways to keep them occupied during this time so they can focus on trying times and not always worry about things. Make sure you have music on so they can sing songs they like. If they like reading, try and bring books to read with them and talk about the book, whether it's a picture book or a video game. Also, play games together as well as read stories together. You may end up saying they didn't have any favorite toys to play with because you had to spend time making sure you're there for them too.

When it comes to homework or studying, explain to them that you just got home and tell them it will be taken care of. Even if they don't get what they want they'll understand to be patient with you. Not making promises you won't meet their needs is one way to give them some slack and make sure they don't feel neglected. Be confident in what you say, but also remember that you did everything possible for them. Maybe their grades are lower than you want because you didn't focus enough on doing what you said you were going to do. Instead of letting anything go, see it as an opportunity to show them they can do more and also that you want them to succeed. In most cases, you don't want to hear excuses about how much you wanted them to do a particular task. You just want them to make great choices that can lead to success.

Be aware of body language so they have a good idea of where you're coming from. When you're standing by them and giving them some space, you can tell them you're calm. Show your respect and being willing to stick their head under the water can help avoid causing issues or making them feel ignored. You can also use phrases like "it's ok" or "I'm okay". These are all examples of positive body language and can reassure them that others are listening and not judging. For example, "It's okay to be sad" or "It's okay to be angry." Just saying it can help keep the issue of your child feeling misunderstood or that you're trying to understand what is happening in their world. That way nothing bad happens down the road.

Sometimes some adults forget to try and fix the children they have in the first place. Some parents don't know how to speak to a child and even when you think you've figured out a method of communicating with a child it seems the kid does not pick up on it. Sometimes it just takes too long or just doesn't work so you have to resort to talking about it. But in their case, it's better to give them the chance to be frustrated and at least show some communication skills to try and make sure they are heard. No matter what you have to say, if they're stubborn, stay firm. You can't just walk away from these kids now and then because eventually, you'll have them on your side. Give them the chance they deserve and maybe one day they'll learn to cope with things without the pressure of needing something they don't.
